Can burnout cause physical symptoms?

Burnout can come with physical complaints. Prospective studies found that it predicted, for example, complaints such as musculoskeletal pain, headaches and gastrointestinal problems, and illnesses such as coronary heart disease. Physical complaints belong in a medical assessment, because illnesses can cause them too.

A systematic review of prospective studies in PLoS One (2017) found burnout to be a significant predictor of, for example, high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, musculoskeletal pain, prolonged fatigue, headaches, gastrointestinal issues and respiratory problems. The authors also note conflicting findings.

The DGPPN described burnout in 2012 as a possible state of risk for illnesses such as chronic pain syndrome, tinnitus, high blood pressure or chronic infectious diseases, and pointed out that burnout can be an early symptom or a consequence of illnesses such as multiple sclerosis or tumours.

This is why physical complaints should be examined before they are attributed to stress.
