Why do I wake up at 3 or 4 a.m.?

Waking very early, for example at 3 or 4 a.m., can be a symptom of depression. Frequent waking at night can also point to, for example, sleep apnoea.

The WHO lists disrupted sleep as a possible symptom of depression. The UK National Health Service (NHS) describes disturbed sleep in depression, for example difficulty falling asleep at night or waking up very early in the morning.

For sleep apnoea, the NHS lists breathing that stops and starts during sleep, gasping, snorting or choking noises, waking up a lot and loud snoring, with tiredness during the day.

So-called “adrenal fatigue” is not among the established causes. According to the Endocrine Society, no scientific proof supports it as a true medical condition, and there is no test that can detect it.
